A mate of mine is playing this and doesnt seem to worries about the problems, but it bothers me to no end. Was too late for me to string together a readable post so I waited until morning. They will not however do anything (no animations), just supply food or defense. Non-human/ghoul companions can be assigned tasks, but you have to assign each plant/station manually and limit yourself to 6 points in food or defense. Anyway the second fix I posted works in so far as I can use human/ghoul companions like normal settlers and others for supply lines. I just got Valentine and he is "commandable" but broken like Codsworth and Strong. I did McCreadys questline/romanced him and he was the only companion I could assign. That's how I was able to track what everyone was doing (McCready's old artillery piece is still unmanned :( ) I forgot to mention in my game I have my primary base (Castle) occupied by nothing but companions and a couple legendary vendors. I'm not sure if the quest is causing it or a certain affinity level as most of my playthrough was solo and now only just started to work on all my companions the last few days. The only thing they will work is that they'll default to farming if there are available crops which appears to be like the only job people will default to if available (maybe guard posts also but not sure I dont ever build them).

What I found, at least in my game, was that as soon as I completed a follower's special quest (like Curie-Synth, McCready-Debt, etc.) I was no longer able to assign those followers. As some other posters mentioned, I was definately able to assign companions to work details and some I still can like Deacon, Preson whom I have manning an artillery piece, Piper also manning artillery piece, Strong is running a long range supply route, etc. Here is what I discovered in my playthrough.     I just never walked over there for some reason. It is behind the yellow crafting house towards the bridge.
